The Sport Management Club had the opportunity to meet and hear from Ryan McLear of the New York Islanders. McLear is the Events & Operations Coordinator for the Islanders. McLear shared his experiences working in the dynamic game operations department for the Islanders with students. McLear also gave the students some words of encouragement to work hard, get tasks done in a timely manner, jump at opportunity that arise, have fun and drink a lot of coffee.

The Sport Management Club had the opportunity to Skype interview with Shirin Malkani. Malkani is the Senior Vice President of Global Media Distribution at the NBA. Malkani shared her experiences with students and answered questions about what the NBA has to offer, the culture of working for a professional sports league and the skills to achieve success in the sports industry. Club Advisor Sab Singh and 34 students attended the Sport Management Club's field trip to Madison Square Garden on Friday November 14th. Highlights from the trip included seeing the New York Knicks and New York Rangers locker rooms, James Dolan's private suite, the Chase Bridges', and one of the four beer rooms in the building.
During the field trip we took the MSG All Access Tour as well as met with Colleen Stratton of the Human Resources Department. Colleen coordinates the Student Associate Internship program at the Madison Square Garden Company. "Madison Square Garden re-fills 1,042 kegs a day, MSG is host to 280 events a year and the most events held in one day at MSG was four events." - Tour Guide Constantine. Ann Liguori, a nationally known sports radio and television personality, talk show host, journalist, author, and television producer in the world of sports media was the first woman to host a call-in sports show on WFAN-New York. Ann hosted a sports talk show for over 20 years and continues as the station's golf and tennis correspondent covering events including The Masters, U.S. Open (golf), PGA Championships, U.S. Open (tennis) and special competitions such as the Ryder Cup and both the summer and winter Olympics. Ann shared her experiences about when she first got her foot in the door interning and
working in the industry gaining as much experience as she could, how she was able to network and meet many professionals in the business, and how she learned about the business of sports while working in the sport industry. Ann answered questions from the students in the audience and offered advice to all of them about what they could do to help themselves in the future. "I had a great time...the audience was completely attentive and I enjoyed the experience." - Ann Liguori Members of the Sport Management Club attended a New York Cosmos game on June 8th. Before the game, students had the chance to meet with Sales Manager Erick Estrada and Account Executive Tim Casey to discuss the Cosmos and their famous history as well as opportunities that the Cosmos have to offer for students!
Sport Management Club Wins at the 2014 Campus Life Awards! On April 30th, Farmingdale State College hosted the annual Campus Life Awards from 6pm-8pm in the Little Theater in Roosevelt Hall. This award ceremony reflects on all of the great accomplishments clubs and students have achieved on campus for the 2013-2014 school year. The Sport Management Club won the 2014 Outstanding Club of the Year Award and Club Adviser Professor Sab Singh won the Club Adviser of the Year Award!!! Congratulations to all of the club members and Professor Singh! The Sport Management Club and Sigma Beta Delta of Farmingdale State College had such a great turn out on April 19th as students, faculty, and the Farmingdale community came to the campus to donate their used and new sports equipment to help benefit Children's Sport Connection. Hundreds of sports equipment was collected and the equipment was distributed to children of Valley Stream PAL, The Long Beach Recreation Center, and PS 69 in the Bronx. The SMC had the opportunity to volunteer for the 2014 NFL Super Bowl
from January 20th to February 3rd, 2014. Students volunteered at the Social Media Communications Center in Manhattan! Volunteers would spread the word about Super Bowl XLVIII and help answer any questions about the Super Bowl by using social media. #SBquestions #SBXLVIII #SEAvsDEN #NYNJ The Sport Management Club went on a field trip on November 18th to the Barclays Center. A total of thirty-two students and two faculty members attended the trip.

I emailed the Super Bowl Host Committee and asked them what volunteer opportunities were available. Instead of being greeters at airports, hotels, train stations, and tourist attractions, the Super Bowl Host Committee has offered us an opportunity to work at their Social Media Communications Center. From January 20th-February 3rd, volunteers would work shifts from 8am-2pm, 2pm-6pm, or 6pm-10pm. Members coordinated the finish line and helped direct the 30,000+ runners towards the Wellness Team where runners could be treated for injuries, muscle pain, or fatigue once they finished the race. |
